A WNY Homeowner’s Guide to Fence Materials, Styles, and Local Considerations

Choosing a fence for your Western New York property is a big decision — and the right choice depends on more than just looks. Between our lake-effect snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and varying municipal permit requirements, WNY homeowners need to think about durability, maintenance, local regulations, and of course, what the fence is actually for.

At American Fence Company of Western New York, we’ve been helping homeowners across Tonawanda, Buffalo, Amherst, Cheektowaga, and surrounding communities choose and install the right fence for decades. Here’s what you need to know before you start.

Start with Your “Why”

Before you compare materials, get clear on the primary purpose of your fence. That one decision narrows down your options significantly.

Privacy — If you want a visual barrier from neighbors or a busy street, wood and vinyl privacy fences are your best options. Both come in solid-panel styles that block sightlines completely. A 6-foot privacy fence is the standard height for most WNY municipalities.

Security and Safety — Need to keep kids or pets safely in your yard? Chain link and ornamental aluminum both provide strong, durable barriers. If you have a pool, New York State requires a fence of at least 48 inches around it — and the gate must be self-closing and self-latching.

Curb Appeal — Ornamental aluminum fencing adds an elegant, classic look to your property without blocking views. It’s a popular choice in WNY neighborhoods with attractive landscaping or scenic surroundings.

Property Boundaries — Sometimes a fence is simply about defining where your property begins and ends. Chain link is the most affordable option for marking boundaries, and it’s nearly maintenance-free.

Know Your Materials

Each fencing material handles WNY’s climate differently. Here’s how the most popular options stack up for our region.

Wood Fences

Wood is the classic choice for privacy fencing and remains one of the most popular options in Western New York. Cedar and pressure-treated pine are the most common materials used here. Wood gives you the most design flexibility — you can choose from dog-ear, board-on-board, shadowbox, and many other styles.

Best for: Privacy, traditional appearance, customizable designs

WNY consideration: Our harsh winters and wet springs mean wood fences require regular maintenance. Plan on staining or sealing every 2-3 years to prevent rot, warping, and graying. A well-maintained wood fence typically lasts 15-20 years.

Vinyl Fences

Vinyl has become increasingly popular in WNY because of its low maintenance requirements. It won’t rot, peel, or need painting — an occasional wash with a garden hose keeps it looking new for years.

Best for: Low-maintenance privacy, clean modern appearance

WNY consideration: Vinyl holds up well in our climate overall, but extreme cold can make it slightly more brittle. Avoid piling heavy snow directly against vinyl panels, and be careful with snow blowers near the fence line. Quality vinyl fencing typically lasts 20-30 years with minimal upkeep.

Ornamental Aluminum

Aluminum fencing offers the look of traditional wrought iron without the rust and heavy maintenance. It’s powder-coated for weather resistance and comes in a variety of styles and heights.

Best for: Curb appeal, pool enclosures, front yard boundaries

WNY consideration: Aluminum handles our freeze-thaw cycles very well and won’t rust or corrode. It’s one of the most weather-resistant options available. Snow and ice generally don’t affect it, though you may occasionally need to clear ice from gate latches during winter.

Chain Link

Chain link is the most affordable and durable fencing option, and it’s a practical choice for large properties, backyards, and pet containment. Modern chain link comes in galvanized steel or vinyl-coated options in black, green, and brown.

Best for: Budget-friendly security, pet containment, large properties

WNY consideration: Chain link is virtually indestructible in our climate. The vinyl-coated versions resist rust even better than standard galvanized, and the color options help them blend in more naturally with your landscaping.

WNY Permit Requirements: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we get is whether a permit is needed. The short answer: it depends on your municipality.

In the Town of Tonawanda, fence installations typically require a building permit from the Building Department. The City of Buffalo requires permits for most fence installations as well. Amherst and Cheektowaga have their own specific requirements, including setback rules and finished-side-out regulations.

A few general rules apply across most WNY municipalities: fences in front yards are typically limited to 4 feet in height, while side and rear yard fences can usually be up to 6 feet. The “finished” or decorative side of the fence should face outward toward your neighbor. Fences must be set back from the property line (usually at least 1 foot, but this varies). You should always call 811 before digging to have underground utilities marked.

When you work with American Fence Company, we handle the permit process for you and ensure your installation meets all local codes.

Budget Considerations

Fence costs vary based on material, style, height, and the size of your property. Chain link is the most affordable option. Wood falls in the mid-range, with cost depending on the wood species and style. Vinyl costs more upfront but saves on long-term maintenance. Ornamental aluminum is a premium option but offers exceptional durability and aesthetics.

Keep in mind that the cheapest option upfront isn’t always the most economical over time. A vinyl fence that lasts 25+ years with no staining or repairs can cost less over its lifetime than a wood fence that needs regular maintenance.
